Poker Rules - Definitions

Ante - a player's opening bet or preset contribution to the pot.  Placed before any cards are dealt.

Bad beat pots a patron funded pot of money that progressively grows and is then distributed back to players by the casino each time a predetermined event happens.

Bet a player's wager to the pot.

Blind bet a bet made before the first card of the game is dealt

Button an object which moves clockwise around the table stopping in front of each player denoting an imaginary dealer.

Buy-in when a player buys chips.

Call a bet made equaling the amount of the bet most recently placed.

Check to give-up the right to start the betting in a round, you can still call

Community Cards (in Texas Hold'em) cards dealt face up, can be used by all players to make their best hand.

Draw (in draw poker) the taking of further cards by a player before the second round of betting.

Flop (in Texas Hold'em & Omaha) the first three community cards dealt face up simultaneously.

Fold discarding a hand and not matching a bet

Hole-card a player's card which other players don't see.

Live stakes chips, tokens, coins, and currency on the table in front of a player

Misdeal an incorrectly dealt hand.

Pot the total amount anted and bet by players during a game.  The Pot is located on the table and is given to the winning player or players.

Raise a bet in an amount that exceeds the bet most recently placed in that round

Rake-off (or Rake) the casino's take.

Round a cycle of bets made by the players after the cards are dealt

Stake the money you have into the game

Wild Card a card with any value that a player chooses.
