Poker Rules - Shuffle, Cut, Ante, & Deal

Shuffling and Cutting the Cards

Before play begins the dealer must shuffle and cut the cards.  Shuffling must take place in front of the game's players and the cut must end with the bottom part of the deck on top.  The cutting card is placed on the bottom of the deck hiding the face of the bottom card.  The bottom card is never dealt.

Casinos licensed in Deadwood are required to have two separate, different colored decks of cards available at each table and must switch decks upon the request from a player.  The switch takes place at the end of the hand being played.

Ante

It is up to the House (casino) whether an ante is used in the game.  If an ante is used then each player, for each hand and before any cards are dealt, places chips totaling the ante amount on the table in front of her/himself.  The dealer will sweep the antes and place them in the pot.  The ante may not be altered once the first card is dealt.

The Deal

Cards are dealt out of the hand of the dealer. A "dealers button" is moved around the table clockwise from player to player, giving the player with the button the advantage of playing and betting last. The first holder of the button is decided by dealing for the high card.
